Values in Action Strengths test

Access this excellent free test of strengths here.

I often work with clients who have a top 5 list of strengths as we identify what implications this might have for the workplace and for their next career move.

Career Storm Navigator

For a while now I’ve been using CareerStorm Navigator with clients who can’t get to London.  It’s been really successful and so I thought I’d share a bit more about how it works.

Unlike other online career tools, it doesn’t try to give you a type or ‘match’ you with a list of ideal careers.  Rather, it helps to structure a thinking process which helps people to work through their options logically.  Instead of drifting into their next career, or blindly following the results of a psychometric test, CSN helps people to navigate forward with purpose.

Although not free, this is an incredibly good investment for people who want to structure their own career decision and don’t have much money to spend.

How does it work?

The system itself is split into sections which closely mirrors my own process when I work 1 to 1 with clients.

  • Where am I now?
  • Where am I going?
  • How will I get there?

Venture Navigator.

Venture Navigator was created by the Business Edge Consortium which cosists of the Universities of Essex, Cambridge, Leeds, Liverpool, Glasgow and Warwick plus The Open University.   In particular, I like the following (free) assessments:

Personal:

Business:

There’s also a groovy online community  where you can ask questions and have clever people answer.  Nice.

Jung Typology Test

If you really must do a Myers-Briggs type test, you can take this one by answering ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to a series of statements in order to determine the combination of characteristics you possess. You’re then identified as a particular personality type based on these results. Finally, they feed back a list of suitable career options and also some educational institutions where you can receive the relevant skills training for the specific career areas.

Career Psychometrics: ‘How to land your ideal job’

You have 2 minutes 45 seconds to answer a short series of multiple choice questions regarding to what extent you possess certain personality traits. After you’ve completed it, you get a free Personality Report that explicitly tells you not only what type of job is for you, but also what type of job isn’t.

Finding Potential: ‘Individuals’ Personality Questionnaire’

Now this is excellent.

This test takes around 15 minutes to complete and gives you a 15 page report that shows you to what extent you possess certain personality traits; gives you a detailed breakdown of these traits; and then matches work preferences and possible jobs to you in accordance with which personality traits you strongly possess and which ones you don’t.

SimilarMinds.com: ‘What Career Suits Me’?

This one is slightly different in that it first asks you what your ‘current or desired’ career is before the test begins properly. The test itself gives you a list of statements and you indicate how strongly you agree or disagree with each one. Based on the results, you’re identified as a certain type of person (I am an ‘Idealist’) and given a list of possible professions.

Final questions:

What had real meaning for you from what you’ve heard? What surprised you? What challenged you?

• What’s missing from this picture so far? What is it we’re not seeing? What do we need more clarity about?

• What’s been your/our major learning, insight, or discovery so far?

• If there was one thing that hasn’t yet been said in order to reach a deeper level of understanding/clarity, what would that be?
